Akala Garrett breaks 21-year old school record in the 400m hurdles

Former Longhorn Julien Alfred sets world-leading time in the 200 meters.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Texas sophomore Akala Garrett broke a 21-year school record in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday night at the Tom Jones Memorial. Garrett's time of 53.73 topped the previous mark of 54.16 set by Raasin McIntosh.
The time also moved Garrett up to No. 9 all-time in NCAA history. Freshman Mackenzie Collins finished 10th in the event with a personal-best time of 56.78.
The men's 400-meter hurdles saw junior Kody Blackwood move up to No. 3 on the UT all-time performer list with his runner-up effort of 48.79. Damon Frabotta was 14th with a personal-best time of 51.47, while Chris Brinkley Jr. placed 18th in 51.47.
Aaliyah Foster moved up on the UT all-time performer list with her fourth-round jump of 6.46m (21-2.50). The mark improved her spot at No. 8 on the Texas list and gave her a fifth-place finish in the competition. Texas-Ex Ackelia Smith finished fourth at 6.54m (21-5.50).
The men were led by NCAA indoor long jump champion Kelsey Daniel who finished third overall but was the top collegian with a jump of 7.61m (24-11.75). Senior Solomon Washington was sixth with a jump of 7.41m (24-3.75) and Texas Ex Leo Neugebauer was fifth at 7.51m (24-7.75).
Back on the track, the Longhorns past, present and future dominated the women's 200-meter. Julien Alfred, the 2025 Olympic silver medalist in the event, opened her season with a world-leading time of 21.88. Rhasidat Adeleke, the Olympic 400-meter fourth-place finisher was fifth in 22.57. Texas signee Elise Cooper competed against the pros and finished seventh in 22.96, while two-time Olympian Stacey Ann Williams was 14th in 23.31.
In the collegiate 200m, freshman Holly Okuku was the runner-up with a personal best time of 22.88. Kenondra Davis also went sub-23 with her time of 22.999 to finish third, while Carleta Bernard was ninth in 23.37. Xavier Butler was eighth in the men's 200m in 20.64.
Sophomore Nina Ndubuisi was third in the women's shot put with a throw of 18.21m (59-9) and Chrystal Herpin was sixth at 17.25m (56-7.25). Michael Piñones was eighth in the men's shot put with a throw of 18.50m (60-8.50).
