Texas ties a NCAA Softball Tournament record with six home runs in a game.
AUSTIN, Texas – The only thing as sizzling as the 95-degree temperature at Red & Charline McCombs Field on Saturday afternoon was The University of Texas softball program's offense as the Longhorns hammered out 16 runs on 15 hits en route to earning a second consecutive five-inning victory after beating Michigan, 16-4. Eight of the nine Longhorns in the starting lineup was credited with at least one hit and scored at least one run on the afternoon with five driving in at least one run on the afternoon as well.
In the opening inning, Indiana Langford scored for Michigan following a single to left field by Lilly Vallimont. However, in the top of the second inning, Katie Stewart hit a solo home run to left center, putting the Longhorns on the scoreboard, while Teagan Kavan and the Texas defense ensured a scoreless inning for Michigan.
The Longhorns established a commanding lead, pushing their lead to 4-1 following a three-run home run off the bat of Reese Atwood. Stewart followed Atwood's home run with her second home run of the day, this time to left field. Both of Stewart's home runs on the afternoon went 269 feet.
The Wolverines responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the Longhorns' lead to 5-3.
In the fourth inning, Texas blew the game open with a nine-run frame. Kaydee Bennett hit a home run to right field, scoring Leighann Goode, who was soon followed by Adayah Wallace. Mia Scott reached base due to a fielding error, allowing Henry to score from second. After the bases were loaded following a five-pitch walk to Stewart, Joley Mitchell connected with a grand slam.
To cap off the inning, Goode homered to center field, marking the sixth home run on the day for the Longhorns.
Atwood and Stewart concluded their seven-RBI performance by driving in a pair during the top of the fifth to set a new program record for most runs scored by a Texas team in a NCAA Regional.

FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"We can't carry any runs over to tomorrow's game, so it's going to be a fresh start. And the game doesn't know who is supposed to win; it rewards the team who plays the game the best. I know it's cliché, but it really is true. We have to stay grounded, stay focused and not get too far ahead of ourselves. We have to have quality at bats, which I think we did a really good job of today against Michigan."
FROM SOPHOMORE KATIE STEWART
"Yeah, I think being able to win the first game helps give our pitching a little bit of a break rather than having to pitch two games in the sun. For us, as hitters, it also lets us lock into whoever we have to play and not worry about being tired, more so just going into tomorrow's game against whoever we play and being able to give them our best effort."
GAME NOTES
- Saturday's six home runs hit by Texas marked the most home runs hit by a Longhorn team during any regular season or postseason game at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
- Katie Stewart became the fourth Longhorn softball student-athlete to hit multiple home runs in a single game this season, joining Reese Atwood (vs. Colorado State on Feb. 21), Katie Cimusz (at Florida on March 15) and Mia Scott (at Mississippi State on March 28).
- With her stolen base in the top of the fourth inning, Kayden Henry recorded just the fifth 30-stolen base season in program history and first since Brejae Washington had 33 throughout 2014 campaign.
- Henry joins Washington and Shannon Thomas as the only Longhorn softball student-athletes with 30-or-more stolen bases in a single season.
- By recording a pair of base hits throughout Saturday's five-inning contest, Ashton Maloney became just the fourth Texas softball student-athlete with 80-or-more hits in a single season, joining Janae Jefferson, Lindsay Gardner and Reese Atwood.
- When combing with Atwood's 80 hits throughout the 2024 season, Maloney and Atwood are the first pair of Longhorn softball teammates to be credited with 80-or-more in back-to-back seasons.
- With the win over Michigan, Texas has now won nine consecutive NCAA Regional games, which is one shy of tying the program record (10) set from 2003 to 2006.
UP NEXT
