Teagan Kavan strikes out eight to lift Texas to its first-ever WCWS win over the Sooners.
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – On what was one of the most emotional days of Teagan Kavan's life, the Texas sophomore ace turned in a legendary performance in the pitching circle as the sixth-seeded Longhorns bested the second-seeded Oklahoma Sooners, 4-2, to remain in the winner's bracket of the Women's College World Series.
With the entirety of the Texas softball program lifting her and her family up on Saturday afternoon, Kavan (26-5) threw 129 pitches, struck out eight, recorded seven flyouts and induced six groundouts. She scattered seven hits – no extra base hits – issued two walks and surrendered two runs, including an unearned run.
Outside of a two-run top of the second, Kavan did not allow a Sooner baserunner to reach third base outside of the first and sixth innings. To put a feather in the cap of her performance on Saturday afternoon, she recorded all three outs in the top of the seventh via strikeout.
Kavan's teammates gave her an early two-run lead after one inning of play after Kayden Henry broke the 0-0 tie by stealing home and scoring the game's first run. Mia Scott followed moments later when she scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Reese Atwood.
Oklahoma responded with two in the top of the second, before Kayden Henry broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out, solo home run.
After the Sooners worked the game-tying runner to third with only one out in the top of the sixth, Kavan got a strikeout and a flyout to Scott to strand the runner. Joley Mitchell used the momentum to send a 2-1 pitch over the field for a solo home run to open the bottom of the sixth and extend the Longhorns' lead out to 4-2.
Oklahoma attempted a seventh-inning rally as the game-tying run reached first with a one-out single to right field. But Kavan responded with back-to-back swinging strikeouts on just seven pitches to seal the game.
GAME NOTES
- With her steal of home in the bottom of the first, Kayden Henry became just the eighth student-athlete in program history with 60-or-more career stolen bases.

- With her leadoff single to open the bottom of the third, Ashton Maloney was credited with her 90th hit on the season, joining Janae Jefferson (92, 2022) as the only Longhorn softball student-athletes with 90-or-more hits in a single season.

- Saturday's victory marked the first-ever win for Texas over Oklahoma at the Women's College World Series.
- It was also the first time the Longhorns have beaten the Sooners in Oklahoma City since May 13, 2005, when Texas earned a 3-1 victory during the Big 12 Conference Tournament.
