AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Texas Rowing senior Sue Holderness was named to the Southeastern Conference's Community Service Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. Holderness, a Management major from Charlotte, is one of three rowing student-athletes placed on the Community Service Team, joining Alabama's Olivia Lestelle and Tennessee's Meg Flanagan.
Holderness has been volunteering with the Inside Books Project, which works to promote reading, literacy, and education among incarcerated individuals. With this community service project, she writes letters to inmates in Texas and then helps select and send books to the inmates based on their reading interests. During Women's History Month in March, she was a book reader at Harris Elementary School in Austin, Texas. The Fitness School is another community service initiative she's passionate about. Started by UT Alum Jason Williams, Holderness volunteers with The Fitness School by helping teach physical fitness to youth in Austin, emphasizing the importance of mental and physical fitness. She has also been a mentor in the Strong Girls United program, guiding young girls "to be strong, confident, and resilient through sports, mentorship and mental health programming".
During the 2025 season, Holderness was named the SEC's Rower of the Week on April 3. She helped Texas capture the 2024 NCAA National Championship (team title) along with an NCAA National Runner-Up finish in the Second Varsity Eight. She also earned Academic First-Team All-Big 12 recognition to close out the 2024 season. During her career on the Forty Acres, Holderness has helped Texas win three conference championships. In addition, she was also placed on the 2023 Academic All Big-12 First Team.
