No. 3/5 Softball bows out of SEC Tournament
05.09.2025 | Softball
Texas will now learn its NCAA Tournament postseason fate on Selection Sunday.
ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Texas softball team fell in the semifinals of the 2025 SEC Tournament to Texas A&M, 14-2, in five innings on Friday night.
The Aggies, who entered the contest as the No. 1 team in the country and winners of four of their last five contests, ran out to an early six-run lead after the first inning. The lead was nearly doubled during the second frame as TAMU added five more in the run column to push its lead to 11-0. A three-run home run in the bottom of the third made it 14-0, Aggies, before the Longhorns were able to get through their batting order one time.
Ashton Maloney, who began the game with a first-pitch single, became Texas' second baserunner of the game in the fourth, when she was credited with an infield single. Kayden Henry followed with another infield single. Both advanced a base, before ultimately coming around to score on a one-out single through the left side by Reese Atwood.
Katie Stewart tried to keep the momentum going by drawing a full-count walk, but she was erased at second on fielder's choice. Maloney became the Longhorns' final baserunner of the evening when the Missouri native earned her game-high third hit with a two-out single to left field.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Obviously, we got beat pretty soundly today. It hurts, for sure, losing a rivalry game in a semifinal of the SEC Championship, but we were outplayed by a better team today. We've got to take it, learn from it, and hopefully do something a little bit better. Make some adjustments but hats off to them. It was a good crowd tonight, so that was exciting to see. People came out to watch some good softball. Again, it's really just tough to speak right now."
FROM REDSHIRT JUNIOR ASHTON MALONEY
"I think what's important right now is to understand that our season is not over. Postseason, it started this week, but we have a new season starting. None of what happened this week, none of what happened this season matters. Starting on Sunday for the selection show, it's a new season."

- With her strikeout to end the bottom of the third, Sophia Simpson has now struck out at least one batter in her last 26 consecutive pitching appearances, a streak that started on April 8, 2023 during a trip to Ames, Iowa.
