Women’s Basketball earns silver medal at Globl Jam

Texas finished with a 3-1 record at the tournament.
TORONTO – The Texas Women's Basketball team advanced to the gold medal game against host Canada but came up short in a 72-65 defeat on Sunday. Texas finished with a 3-1 record at the tournament.
Breya Cunningham led Texas with 13 points and eight rebounds and Rori Harmon scored 10 points and dished out nine assists. Madison Booker was the third Texas player to score in double figures with 11 points and she added six rebounds.
Canada led 12-11 in the first quarter, but Texas stormed back with a 7-0 run to end the quarter and went up 18-12 on a steal by Lee and layup by Booker.
At the 5:28 mark of the second quarter Rori Harmon drove to the basket made a layup and got fouled. Harmon made the free-throw to put the Longhorns up 28-23 in the second quarter.
Jordan Lee scored on the final possession of the opening half for Texas. Lee got a steal and pulled up for a jumper with 12 seconds left to give the Longhorns a 39-33 lead at the half.
Canada tied the game 48-48 at the 2:59 mark of the third quarter. Canada was running the fast break and appeared to have a layup, but Booker blocked the shot. Booker raced down the court on the other end and found Preston, who took it to the basket for the score to put Texas up 50-48.
Canada used a 6-0 run to end the third quarter with a 54-52 lead and scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to increase that lead to seven at 59-52.
With Canada up 62-54 at the 7:17 mark of the fourth quarter Cunningham connected on back-to-back baskets to bring Texas with within four at 62-58. The Longhorns closed to within three at 66-63 at the 2:57 mark of the fourth period, but that is the closest they could come as Canada scored eight of the final 12 points of the game for the victory.
Postgame Notes
• Texas finished the Globl Jam tournament with a 3-1 record. The Longhorns had the best record after round robin play at 3-0 entering the championship game.
• Texas forced 19 Canada turnovers and converted 16 points off turnovers.
• The Longhorns scored 38 points in the paint and got good production from their bench with 19 points from the reserve players. Jordan Lee led the reserve players with eight points and collected three steals.
• Rori Harmon finished the tournament with 27 assists and seven turnovers in four games.
• Breya Cunningham scored in double figures for the second straight game with her 13 points. Cunningham connected on 13-of-20 from the field in her last pair of games including 7-of-10 tonight.
• Freshman Aaliyah Crump scored in double figures in the first game against Canada with 13 points and followed it up with 11 points in the win over Brazil.
• In her debut game with the Longhorns, Ashton Judd scored 15 points and knocked down four 3-pointers in the Texas win over Puerto Rico.
• Bryanna Preston highlighted the Texas win over Brazil with 22 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
