Bulldogs score three goals in second half to win 12th straight SEC match
AUSTIN, Texas — In their Southeastern Conference home opener, the Texas Longhorns fell to the 12th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs, 3-0, Thursday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Longhorns (2-6-1, 0-2 SEC) held the Bulldogs (7-1, 2-0 SEC) in check through the intermission, but a three-goal outburst across a 20-minute period vaulted the visitors to victory.
Freshman Laila Murillo registered her first career brace, delivering tallies 13 minutes apart. Meanwhile, senior Ally Perry netted her ninth career game-winning goal in the 58th minute.
Perry opened the scoring with a picturesque shot from about 25 yards, tucking her right-footed strike underneath the bar.
Six minutes later, Murillo buried home her second career tally just right of the penalty spot, capitalizing on a perfect feed from sophomore Kara Harris.
In the 77th minute, Murillo tapped home a loose ball in front of the goal to cap off the scoring.
With the win, the Bulldogs extended their SEC winning streak to 12 matches, dating back to last season.
In the defeat, Texas outshot Missisippi State, 11-6. The Longhorns also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, Texas travels to face the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
