McDonald scores third goal in as many matches
COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Texas soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit, as the Longhorns dropped their Southeastern Conference opener to Missouri, 3-1, at Audrey J. Walton Stadium on Friday evening.
Forward Ava McDonald pulled Texas (2-5-1, 0-1-0 SEC) within a goal in the 81st minute, but the Tigers (4-3-1) answered moments later to put the match out of reach.
McDonald — who registered her first career brace against College of Charleston on Aug. 31 — rocketed a right-footed missile past Missouri goalkeeper Kate Phillips to deliver her team-leading fourth tally and inject life into the Longhorns.
The Tigers quickly responded following the ensuing kickoff, as forward Emily Derucki laid out to head home a highlight-reel worthy goal into the bottom left corner.
Missouri midfielder Olivia Chianelli opened the scoring in the 27th minute, firing a strike straightaway from the top of the box.
Forward Brianna Buels doubled the Tigers advantage after the intermission, tapping a perfect cross from Bella Carrillo into the back of the net.
In the defeat, Texas outshot Missouri, 12-10.
The Longhorns' setback snapped a 15-match unbeaten streak against the Tigers in the regular season, which dated back to 1998.
Texas kicks off its home conference slate on Thursday, welcoming Mississippi State to Mike A. Myers Soccer Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on SEC Network.
