Cary, N.C. – Texas Women's Tennis sophomore No. 21 Carmen Herea captured a top-five win on Saturday to reach the singles final of the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C.
Herea topped 3 seed No. 5 Luciana Perry of Ohio State, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to become the first Longhorn to advance to the women's singles final at the ITA All-Americans since Kelly Pace (1994) and Lucie Ludvigova (1993) won back-to-back titles 31 years ago.
Perry took the first set by picking up a late break for a 5-3 lead, and although Herea had two break points in the following game, Perry was able to serve it out.
In the second set, Perry broke first for a 2-1 lead, however it would be the first of four-straight breaks that leveled the set, 3-3. Herea snapped the streak with a hold for 4-3 and then broke again on a deuce point for 5-3 to have an opportunity to serve out, but Perry was able to keep the set alive with another break to get back on serve. Despite that, Herea responded by breaking one more time on a deuce point to send it to a third set.
The breaks continued into the third as Perry opened with one, and again, it was the first of four straight. Herea later broke again for 5-3, and although Perry broke back, Herea closed out the match with a final break for the win.
Herea will next face 4 seed No. 6 Valerie Glozman of Stanford at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT.
