Cary, N.C. – Texas Women's Tennis sophomore No. 21 Carmen Herea finished as the singles runner-up at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C. on Sunday. In doing so, she became the fourth player in program history and the first in 31 years to reach the women's final at the tournament.
The previous Longhorns to reach that final included Kelly Pace in 1994 and Lucie Ludvigova in 1993, who won back-to-back titles, along with Beverly Bowers, who won the tournament in 1985.
Herea fell to 4 seed No. 6 Valerie Glozman of Stanford, 6-2, 6-3. After held her opening serve for a 1-0 lead, Glozman went on a 5-0 run. Herea held for 5-2 after that, but Glozman was able to serve out the set.
The second set featured five deuce points, including the first game, which Glozman won to break and then consolidated for a 2-0 lead. Despite the next three games all going to deuce, they all were held, as was the following game by Glozman for a 4-2. She picked up a second break for 5-2, and although Herea broke back and held on a deuce point, Glozman secured one more break for the win.
Herea and the Longhorns will compete in various pro tournaments over the next two weeks prior to their next collegiate event, which is the ITA Texas Regional Championships from Oct. 9-14 in Fort Worth.
