Vokietaitis scores 22 points and Mark adds 21 to help the Longhorns hand the Commodores their first loss of the season on Wednesday night.
AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis posted a game-high 22 points and graduate guard Tramon Mark added 21 points to pace Texas (11-6, 2-2 SEC) to an 80-64 victory over previously-unbeaten No. 10/8 Vanderbilt (16-1, 3-1 SEC) on Wednesday night before a sellout crowd in Moody Center. Paired with their 92-88 win at No. 13/12 Alabama on Saturday, the Longhorns recorded back-to-back wins in consecutive games against AP Top 15 opponents for the first time since Jan. 30 and Feb. 4, 2023 (victories over No. 11 Baylor and at No. 7 Kansas State).
Texas limited the Commodores to a season-low 64 points on 36.7-percent (22-60) shooting from the floor and recorded a 42-24 advantage on the glass. The Longhorns held Vanderbilt to 27 points in the second half on 26.7-percent (8-30), including a 1-of-10 (.100) mark from three-point range.
Vokietaitis converted 7-of-9 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws while grabbing seven rebounds in 32 minutes. Mark hit 6-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and 5-of-6 free throws while adding four rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in 32 minutes.
Junior Dailyn Swain tallied 14 points (5-8 FG, 4-5 FT), nine rebounds and tied his season high with seven assists in 34 minutes, while senior Jordan Pope registered 12 points (5-11 FG, 2-5 threes) in 36 minutes. Senior Chendall Weaver set a season high with nine rebounds (five offensive) in 23 minutes, and junior Camden Heide tied his season high with six rebounds in 28 minutes.
A back-and-forth first half featured eight lead changes and six ties. A Duke Miles jumper brought the Commodores to within 31-30 at the 5:14 mark, before Texas went on a 9-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to build a 40-30 advantage following a Vokietaitis dunk in transition with 2:31 remaining. Vanderbilt closed the half with a 7-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 42-37 at the break.
The Commodores narrowed the gap to 44-42 after a Devin McGlockton layup at the 18:18 mark, but Vanderbilt could not get any closer in the second half. A Tyler Nickel turnaround jumper pulled the Commodores to within 55-51 with 11:25 remaining, before Texas used a 13-6 run over the next four-plus minutes to increase its cushion to 68-57 following a Weaver layup at the 7:06 mark.
The margin stayed in double digits for the remainder of the contest. Vanderbilt cut the deficit to 72-60 after a Miles jumper with 5:10 left, before the Longhorns sealed the victory with an 8-0 spurt to build a 20-point cushion (80-60) following a Vokietaitis dunk at the 3:00 mark.
Texas is back on the court when it hosts Texas A&M in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown on Saturday, Jan. 17. Tip is slated for 5 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
