Men's Basketball rides second-half surge to top No. 21/22 Georgia, 87-67

Swain posts a game-high 26 points and five steals, while Mark records a season-high 23 points.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain posted a game-high 26 points and graduate guard Tramon Mark added a season-high 23 points to lead Texas (12-8, 3-4 SEC) to an 87-67 victory over No. 21/22 Georgia (16-4, 4-3 SEC) on Saturday afternoon in Moody Center. With the win, the Longhorns improved to 4-3 this season against AP Top 25 opponents.
Swain converted a career-best 12-of-16 field goals, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, and added six rebounds, a season-high five steals (one shy of career high) and two assists in a career-high 39 minutes. His five steals marked the first time a Texas player had recorded at least five steals in a contest since Marcus Carr posted five thefts against TCU on March 10, 2023.
Mark hit a season-high 10-of-16 field goals, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and tied his season high with six rebounds while adding four assists and one steal in 34 minutes. Sophomore Matas Vokietaitis tallied 14 points (5-7 FG, 4-5 FT), a game-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 23 minutes, and senior Jordan Pope registered 14 points (4-8 FG, 5-5 FT) and three assists without a turnover in 31 minutes.
Georgia entered the contest leading the nation in scoring offense (94.8 ppg), but the Longhorns limited the Bulldogs to 67 points on 43.1-percent (22-51) from the floor, including a 31.6-percent (6-19) mark from three-point range. Trailing 37-30 at the break, Texas posted a 57-30 scoring margin in the second half en route to the 20-point win.
Texas jumped out to a 6-2 lead following a Pope jumper at the 17:39 mark, before the Bulldogs responded with an 8-2 spurt over the next two-plus minutes to grab a 10-8 advantage after a Somto Cyril three-point play with 15:23 left. A Chendall Weaver layup evened the score at 12-12 at the 14:00 mark, but Georgia used a 7-1 run to build a 19-13 cushion following a Justin Abson dunk with 11:31 remaining.
A Jordan Ross layup gave the Bulldogs a 27-21 edge at the 5:42 mark, before a Weaver jumper and a Mark three-pointer pulled the Longhorns to within 27-26 with 4:50 left. A Swain layup in transition trimmed the margin to 30-28 at the 4:02 mark, but Georgia closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 37-30 lead into the break.
Texas opened the second half with an 8-0 spurt over the first 2:06 to grab a 38-37 advantage after a Swain layup in transition at the 17:54 mark. The Bulldogs built a 47-43 cushion following a Marcus Millender three-pointer with 15:22 remaining, before the Longhorns responded with a 12-2 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to take a 55-49 lead after a Swain layup at the 12:57 mark.
A Jeremiah Wilkerson three-pointer pulled Georgia to within 55-52 with 12:40 left, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get the rest of the way. The Longhorns blew the game open with a 26-6 run over the next eight-plus minutes to build an 81-58 cushion following a Pope jumper at the 4:11 mark.
Texas returns to action when it travels to face Auburn on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Tip is set for 6 p.m. Central in Neville Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
