Mark records a team-high 20 points in Tuesday night’s loss in Knoxville.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Graduate guard Tramon Mark registered a team-high 20 points, but Texas (9-6, 0-2 SEC) dropped an 85-71 decision at No. 21/22 Tennessee (11-4, 1-1 SEC) on Tuesday night at Food City Center. Mark converted 7-of-13 field goals, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, and 3-of-4 free throws while adding five rebounds in 30 minutes.
Junior forward Camden Heide tallied 16 points (5-10 FG, 4-9 threes, 2-2 FT) and four rebounds in a career-high 35 minutes. Junior guard Simeon Wilcher added 10 points, two assists and two rebounds in 27 minutes.
Tennessee jumped out to an 11-5 lead following a Ja'Kobi Gillespie three-point play at the 15:39 mark, before the Longhorns used a 7-0 spurt over the next minute and a half to grab a 12-11 advantage after a Wilcher three-pointer with 14:10 left. A Chendall Weaver tip-in gave Texas a 14-13 lead at the 11:52 mark, but the Volunteers responded with a 15-3 run to build a 28-17 cushion following a pair of J.P. Estrella free throws with 7:25 remaining.
The Longhorns pulled to within 36-28 after a pair of Mark free throws at the 2:56 mark, but Tennessee closed the half on a 12-5 run capped by an Amari Evans tip-in at the buzzer to take a 48-33 lead into the break.
The Vols opened the second half with an 8-0 run to build a 56-33 advantage after a DeWayne Brown II layup with 17:44 remaining. Texas answered with an 18-5 run over the next seven-plus minutes to trim the margin to 61-51 following a Mark three-pointer at the 10:34 mark.
Tennessee used a 7-0 spurt to grab a 68-51 cushion after a Nate Ament three-point play with 9:13 left, before the Longhorns scored five-straight points to cut the deficit to 68-56 following a pair of Weaver free throws at the 8:38 mark. Texas trimmed the margin to 77-66 after a Wilcher three-pointer with 5:13 remaining, but that was as close as the Longhorns would get down the stretch.
Texas continues its two-game road swing when it travels to face No. 13/12 Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 10. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. Central (8 p.m. Eastern) in Coleman Coliseum, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
