Men’s Tennis advances three to ITA Texas Regionals quarterfinals

The Longhorns put two singles players and one doubles pair in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Fort Worth – Texas Men's Tennis advanced two singles players and one doubles pair to the quarterfinals of the ITA Texas Regional Championships in Fort Worth on Saturday. Junior 5 seed No. 43 Oliver Ojakaar and freshman 9 seed No. 88 Tomasz Berkieta both moved on in singles, while the 7 seed duo of Berkieta and sophomore Lucas Marionneau did so in doubles.
The singles draw featured two rounds on Saturday as Ojakaar first defeated Kriish Tyagi of Texas A&M, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-1, and followed with another three-set win over Louis Bowden of Baylor, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Berkieta first downed Filip Paroulek of UT-Arlington, 6-1, 6-3, before besting Kaj Quirijns of TCU, 6-2, 6-3.
Although he did not advance to the quarterfinals, sophomore Mariano Dedura-Palomero had the top-ranked win of the day, taking down the top seed No. 5 Devin Badenhorst of Baylor, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. However, he then fell to 9 seed No. 93 Albert Pedrico Kravtsov of TCU, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore 9 seed No. 97 Lucas Marionneau also reached the round of 16 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Phoenix Weir of SMU, but dropped his next match to Niksa Arsic of Texas Tech, 7-5, 6-4. Sophomore 8 seed No. 70 Abel Forger came up short in three sets in his round of 32 match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to Felipe Pagnacco of Texas Tech.
Earlier in the day in doubles, Berkieta and Marionneau defeated the 15 seed Ludovico Vaccari and Imran Daniel Abdul Hazli of Texas Tech, 8-4. Although the 3 seed No. 20 Forger and Dedura-Palomero fell by the same score to 14 seed of Quirijns and Roger Pascual Ferra of TCU.
Doubles play continues Sunday with Berkieta and Marionneau facing the 2 seed No. 14 Connor Henry Van Schalkwyk and Erik Schiessl of Baylor at 9 a.m. CT. Then in singles, Ojakaar will play 9 seed Ilia Snitari of Texas A&M, and Berkieta will square off against 9 seed No. 122 Georgi Georgiev of SMU, both at times to be determined.
