Swain (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Vokietaitis (17 points, 10 boards) each record a double-double in Tuesday’s home win.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain registered a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis added 17 points and 10 boards to pace Texas (17-9, 8-5 SEC) to an 88-85 win over LSU (14-12, 2-11 SEC) on Tuesday evening in Moody Center. This marked UT's fifth consecutive league win, marking the first time since late in the 2019-20 season that the Longhorns have recorded five consecutive regular-season conference victories.
Swain, who was limited to just 21 minutes due to foul trouble, converted 7-of-12 field goals, including 1-of-2 threes, and dished out two assists. He topped the 20-point mark for the seventh time in 13 SEC contests and recorded a double-double for the fourth time in league play. Vokietaitis notched his second-straight double-double, his third in SEC play this year and his fifth on the season while hitting 6-of-11 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws and adding two blocked shots in 33 minutes.
Graduate Tramon Mark posted 18 points (6-12 FG, 2-4 threes, 4-6 FT), three rebounds and a season-high three steals in 35 minutes. Senior Jordan Pope tallied 18 points (5-8 FG, 3-3 threes, 5-8 FT) and four rebounds in 27 minutes.
LSU jumped out to a 6-2 advantage following a Jalen Reece layup at the 16:36 mark. A pair of Marquel Sutton free throws gave the Tigers a 17-15 cushion with 10:51 remaining, before Texas used a 12-4 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to grab a 27-21 lead following a Pope three-pointer at the 7:18 mark.
The Longhorns built a 37-27 advantage after a Vokietaitis dunk with 3:43 left, but a Sutton jumper closed the deficit to 37-29 at the 2:52 mark. Texas hit three consecutive three-pointers, two from Mark and the last by Camden Heide, to run off nine-straight points and increase its cushion to 46-29 with 1:24 remaining. A Sutton dunk with five seconds left trimmed the margin to 48-33 at the break. The Longhorns converted 63.0-percent (17-27) from the floor, including a 6-of-9 (.667) mark from three-point range, and hit 8-of-10 (.800) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
Texas increased its advantage to 59-43 following a Swain layup at the 15:35 mark, but the Tigers went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to pull to within 59-55 after a Max Mackinnon jumper with 12:36 remaining. A Rashad King jumper cut the deficit to 67-63 at the 9:16 mark, before the Longhorns used an 8-2 spurt to build a 75-65 cushion following a pair of Vokietaitis free throws with 6:38 left.
Texas took an 82-73 lead after a Pope free throw at the 3:24 mark, but LSU responded with a 9-3 run over the next two minutes to trim the margin to 85-82 following a pair of Reece free throws with 1:39 remaining. Pope knocked down a short baseline jumper to extend the cushion to 87-82 with 32 seconds left. Mark then sealed the victory by hitting 1-of-2 free throws with five seconds left to give the Longhorns an 88-83 lead, before LSU added a layup at the final buzzer.
Texas returns to action when it travels to face Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 21. Tip is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central (3:30 p.m. Eastern) in Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, and the game will be televised nationally by SEC Network.
