Swain posts a team-high 21 points and reaches the 1,000-point mark in his career during Wednesday’s home loss.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard/forward Dailyn Swain recorded a team-high 21 points, but Texas (17-11, 8-7 SEC) fell 84-71 to No. 7/7 Florida (22-6, 13-2 SEC) on Wednesday night in front of a sellout crowd in Moody Center. Swain also reached the 1,000-point mark in his collegiate career during the contest.
Swain converted 7-of-18 field goals and a perfect 7-of-7 free throws while adding seven rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes. He reached the 1,000-point mark on a put-back jumper at the 14:04 mark of the second half and now has 1,008 points in 91 collegiate contests. Graduate Tramon Mark posted 15 points (6-9 FG, 3-5 threes) in 27 minutes, and senior Jordan Pope registered 14 points (2-4 threes, 4-4 FT) in 26 minutes. Sophomore Matas Vokietaitis tallied 12 points (4-9 FG) and six rebounds in 34 minutes.
The first half featured five ties and four lead changes, with the Longhorns holding a lead for a total time of 15:36. An Alex Condon jumper gave the Gators a 6-5 advantage at the 17:41 mark, before Texas ran off five straight points to grab a 10-6 cushion following a Pope three-pointer with 16:15 left. Florida evened the score at 12-12 after an Urban Klavzar jumper at the 13:11 mark, before the Longhorns used an 8-0 spurt over the next two minutes to build a 20-12 advantage following a Mark dunk with 11:10 remaining.
The Gators responded with a 16-7 run over the next five minutes to take a 28-27 lead after a Condon dunk at the 5:53 mark. A pair of Boogie Fland free throws tied the score at 31-31 with 4:43 left, before Texas scored five straight points to build a 36-31 advantage following a Nic Codie three-point play at the 3:33 mark. Florida evened the contest at 36-36 after a Fland three-pointer with 1:21 remaining, before the Longhorns scored the final three points of the half to take a 39-36 lead into the break.
Neither team was able to build more than a three-point lead in the opening eight minutes of the second half. A Swain layup tied the score at 51-51 at the 11:45 mark, but the Gators used a 10-4 spurt over the next two minutes to grab a 61-55 cushion following a Klavzar three-pointer with 9:53 left. Texas answered with a 9-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to build a 64-61 lead after a Pope layup at the 7:27 mark.
Florida responded with a 14-1 run over the next three minutes to take a 75-65 advantage following a Fland three-point with 4:16 remaining. The Longhorns trimmed the deficit to 75-67 after a pair of Pope free throws at the 3:53 mark, but the Gators closed the game on a 9-4 run to seal the win.
Texas returns to action when it travels to College Station to face Texas A&M in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown on Saturday, Feb. 28. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. Central in Reed Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
