Men's Basketball earns 76-70 win at Texas A&M

Mark posts a game-high 23 points in Saturday’s victory in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Graduate guard Tramon Mark recorded a game-high 23 points to lead Texas (18-11, 9-7 SEC) to a 76-70 victory over Texas A&M (19-10, 9-7 SEC) on Saturday afternoon in Reed Arena in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown. With the victory, the Longhorns earned a half-point in the Lone Star Showdown standings.
Mark converted 7-of-13 field goals and a season-high 7-of-7 free throws while adding four rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes. Senior Jordan Pope tallied 17 points (6-11 FG, 2-5 threes, 3-4 FT) and four boards in a season-best 39 minutes, and sophomore Matas Vokietaitis recorded 14 points (6-7 FG, 2-2 FT) and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Junior Dailyn Swain recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds (three offensive) in 29 minutes.
Texas registered a season-best nine blocked shots as a team, including a career-high three rejections from sophomore Nic Codie. The Longhorns also converted a season-high 93.8-percent (15-16) from the free throw line and limited Texas A&M to 38.3-percent (23-60) from the floor, including a 26.3-percent (5-19) mark from three-point range, during the win.
Texas jumped out to a 7-1 lead following a Mark three-pointer at the 17:02 mark. After a Rashaun Agee three-pointer trimmed the margin to 10-6 with 15:21 left, the Longhorns used a 6-2 spurt to build a 16-8 advantage following a Chendall Weaver three-point play at the 13:02 mark.
A pair of Swain free throws increased the cushion to 20-13 with 8:40 remaining, but the Aggies went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to grab a 24-20 lead after a pair of Ruben Dominguez free throws at the 5:43 mark. Texas responded with a 9-4 spurt to take a 29-28 advantage following a Vokietaitis tip-in with 3:13 left, but an Agee jumper with 50 seconds remaining gave Texas A&M a 30-29 lead at the break.
A Marcus Hill layup pulled the Aggies to within 35-34 with 16:40 remaining, before Texas used a 9-2 spurt over the next three minutes to build a 44-36 advantage after a Pope jumper at the 13:33 mark. Texas A&M cut the deficit to four points on three different times over the next four minutes, before a Vokietaitis dunk in transition gave the Longhorns a 55-48 cushion with 7:19 left.
The Aggies scored five-straight points to trim the margin to 55-53 after an Agee dunk at the 6:09 mark, but that was as close as Texas A&M would get for the remainder of the contest. A Zach Clemence free throw pulled the Aggies to within 57-54 with 5:18 remaining, before the Longhorns sealed the victory with a 16-8 run over the next four-plus minutes to build a 73-62 cushion following a pair of Mark free throws with 53 seconds left. Texas hit 11-of-12 free throws in the second half to help close out the road win.
Texas is back on the court when it travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to face No. 20/17 Arkansas on Wednesday, March 4. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central in Bud Walton Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
