Elizabeth Ionescu went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in helping the Longhorns to road wins over Iowa and Wisconsin.
Austin – Texas Women's Tennis freshman Elizabeth Ionescu was named the SEC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It marks the first weekly SEC honor of her career and first for the Longhorns this season.
Ionescu went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in helping Texas to road wins over Iowa, 6-1, and Wisconsin, 5-2. Those included the first singles win of her collegiate career, which came over Pia Kranholdt of Iowa (6-3, 6-1) at No. 4 that clinched the overall match. In doubles against the Hawkeyes, Ionescu and partner Carmen Herea had topped Kranholdt and Emma Tothová (6-3) at No. 2 on the way to Texas taking the doubles point.
That duo then clinched the doubles point against Wisconsin with a win over Tianna Rangan and Kaede Usui (6-2) at No. 3. Ionescu later defeated Usui at No. 6 singles (6-2, 7-5) to give the Longhorns a 3-1 lead over the Badgers.
Ionescu joined the team in January and had only played one singles and one doubles match in her collegiate career prior to this past weekend.
The Longhorns will back on the court Friday to face No. 6 Oklahoma in Champaign, Ill., at the ITA National Indoor Championships, which run from Feb. 6-9.
