Fourth Season at Texas
Warren Young begins his first season as the Senior Associate Athletic Trainer and his fourth year with the men’s basketball program at The University of Texas.
During Young’s first three years in Austin, the Longhorns have registered a 70-29 (.707) overall record, made three NCAA Tournament appearances including a run to the Elite Eight in 2023, and claimed a pair of Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament titles. Young has worked with three NBA Draft selections in Kai Jones, Greg Brown III and Jericho Sims, in addition to Sir’Jabari Rice, who was signed to a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs.
Prior to joining the Texas Athletics staff in November 2020, Young spent the previous 10 years as Senior Associate Athletic Trainer at SMU covering men’s basketball. During his time at SMU, Young worked with future NBA players Jeryl Sasser, Quinton Ross, Sterling Brown, Ben Moore, Semi Ojeleye, Feron Hunt and Shake Milton along with legendary Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown. Since 2018, he also assisted the Dallas Mavericks’ sports medicine staff with home game coverage.
Young spent three years as the Director of Sports Medicine at Texas A&M University-Commerce (2007-10). While at A&M-Commerce, he not only served as the Director of Sports Medicine and Head Football Athletic Trainer but also as the sport administrator for football and the supervisor of the athletic facilities.
Young previously worked at SMU from 2002-07 in the role of Assistant Football Athletic Trainer and Director of Undergraduate Student Athletic Trainer Program. He was a Student Athletic Trainer at SMU from 1995-2000. His sports coverage at SMU has included basketball, football, golf, swimming and diving, track and field and cross country.
Young worked as an athletic trainer for the Dallas Cowboys (NFL) from 1997-2002, Dallas Burn (Major League Soccer) in 2004, and Dallas Desperados (Arena Football League) in 2002.
Young is a certified athletic trainer by the National Athletic Trainer Association Board of Certification and a licensed athletic trainer in the state of Texas. He is CPR/AED certified and a member of the College Athletic Trainer Society. He completed the requirements to become a Corrective Exercise Specialist and is also Dry Needling certified.
Young currently serves as a Clinical Preceptor in conjunction with The University of Texas Accredited Athletic Training Education Program. He was previously a Clinical Preceptor at the University of Texas-Arlington, Texas A&M University-Commerce and Texas State University.
Away from work, he has been involved with the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, Pi Kappa Alpha, Knights of Columbus and the Ryan Gibson Foundation for Leukemia Advocacy. Young was inducted into the Jesuit Dallas Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and is also an Eagle Scout.
Young earned his bachelor’s degree from SMU in 2000 and his Master’s degree from SMU in 2004. He and his wife, Annie, have one daughter, Natalie, and reside in Buda.
