Assistant Coach
Second Season at Texas
A rising talent in collegiate women's basketball, Ron Hughey (Huey) possesses a great combination of passion and coaching experience. An enthusiastic recruiter that specializes in post development, Hughey completed his first year as an assistant coach under Gail Goestenkors at The University of Texas in 2010-11 and saw the Longhorns earn their fourth-consecutive NCAA Championship bid.
Prior to his stint on the Forty Acres, Hughey played a primary role in Rutgers recruiting efforts. While with the Scarlet Knights (2009-10), Hughey also oversaw the coaching of the post players. Rutgers posted a 19-15 record with Hughey on staff and advanced to the NCAA Championship First Round.
Prior to joining the Rutgers staff, Hughey served as the recruiting coordinator at Central Florida. He helped sign Gevenia Carter, the first Top-100 prospect in the history of the UCF program and the lone early commitment in the Top-100 to sign with a Conference USA institution.
Hughey also helped the Golden Knights win their first Conference USA postseason title in 2008-09. Seeded No. 5 in the conference tourney, UCF needed five wins to earn the crown. The Knights defeated No. 12 seed Rice, fourth-seeded Houston, top-seed Southern Methodist University and No. 3 seed Southern Mississippi in overtime during the championship game.
A native of Columbia, S.C., Hughey was a member of the University of South Carolina staff during the 2007-08 season. While there, he helped secure the No. 7 recruiting class in the nation for the Gamecocks. Prior to his time at South Carolina, Hughey spent three seasons (2004-07) as the recruiting coordinator at South Carolina State University.
Before hitting the college circuit, Hughey developed several Division I players as an assistant varsity boys coach at W. J. Kennan High School in Columbia, S.C. (2001-04). Hughey also worked as a scholastic coach at C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy and Alcorn Middle School, both in South Carolina.
Hughey spent three years attending South Carolina State before earning his bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Limestone College in December 2006. He attended C.A. Preparatory Academy, where he was a three-year basketball letterwinner and claimed the State Championship during his senior season. Hughey also lettered in football (at quarterback) and cross country.
He is married to the former Alethea Barnes, a 1994 graduate of the University of South Carolina. He has two daughters, Sanabarabara and Rhonda.
