University of Texas head rowing coach Dave O’Neill announced October 17, 2018 the hiring of Rachel Sander as a director of operations with the Longhorns’ rowing program. Sander provides operations assistance to the Texas Rowing coaching staff.
Sander previously served a short stint as the coordinator of special projects at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. after serving as the director of program development for the Golden Eagles women’s basketball team from 2014-2018. During this time, the team clinched the 2018 BIG EAST Regular season co-champions title and won the 2017 BIG EAST Conference Tournament.
Before her time at Marquette, Sander spent a year as an assistant coach for the rowing team at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where the second varsity eight she coached won the Conference USA championship.
Sander served a two-year stint as an assistant rowing coach at Nova Southeastern University. During her time at NSU she helped the squad to a Sunshine State Conference Championship in 2012, a 2012 NCAA appearance, and the 2013 NCAA Division II Championship.
Sander spent five seasons as the director of women's basketball operations for the University of Miami. Sander's varied responsibilities included managing the day-to-day operations of the women's basketball program, scheduling practices, coordinating team travel and managing community and donor relations. Prior to this position, Sander served a two-year stint as the rowing coordinator with Miami's women's rowing program.
Sander was a four-time letter winner with the Miami rowing team from 2000-2004 and served as a co-captain during her senior year. She helped the team to program-best runner-up finish at the 2004 BIG EAST Championships. Sander was a member of the first place Women’s Club 8+ at the Head of the Chattahoochee in 2003, at which Miami also took home the total points trophy. She also participated with the V8 in the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic in 2003.
A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Sander is a 2004 graduate of Miami with a bachelor's degree in both history and marine affairs. Sander also received her master’s of science in education from Miami in sport administration in 2008.
