Longhorns honored during annual awards banquet

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas football team held its annual awards banquet on Friday night at the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns honored this season's most outstanding individuals for their contributions, not only on the football field, but also academically and within the Austin community.
Headlining this year's winners was senior middle linebacker D.D. Lewis, who collected seven awards. The second-team All-American shared the George "Hook" McCullough Team MVP, permanent Team Captain, Mike Campbell Most Valuable Defensive Player, Outstanding Linebacker, Dr. Nasser Al-Rashid Strength & Conditioning and American Airlines D.X. Bible Team Spirit awards. Lewis also was the recipient of the D. Harold Byrd Leadership Award.
Senior cornerback Quentin Jammer picked up three awards on the evening. Jammer, the 14th unanimous consensus All-American and first-ever Thorpe Award finalist in UT history, shared the George "Hook" McCullough Team MVP and Mike Campbell Most Valuable Defensive Player awards with Lewis. He also was named the Longhorns' Outstanding Defensive Back.
On offense, true freshman running back Cedric Benson led the way with three awards. Benson, a first-team Freshman All-American and the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, was named the Darrell K Royal Most Valuable Offensive Player, the team's Outstanding Offensive Back and Offensive Newcomer of the Year.
This year's permanent Team Captains (as selected by the players) were senior quarterback Major Applewhite, senior free safety Ahmad Brooks and Lewis.
Junior offensive tackle Robbie Doane was named the Lan Hewlett Academic Award winner, while junior special teams standout Beau Trahan earned the team's Coca-Cola Community Service Award in addition to being named the Frank Denius Special Teams Player of the Year.
