Longhorns Receiver Injured in Freak Accident

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas junior wide receiver Kyle Shanahan suffered a major cut that required three layers of stitches in a freak accident at his family home last Saturday morning. Shanahan, who was retrieving the family dog from its fenced-in area in the backyard, was hopping a short fence when his hand slipped and a rod iron post speared his leg.
"Instead of walking around to the gate, I decided to hop the fence," said Shanahan. "It is something that I have done a million times, but this time my hand slipped and I fell on the post."
The injury required two hours of surgery to clean and repair his quadriceps muscle. It left an eight-inch scar on the upper part of his leg.
"I'm upset I will miss some time," the receiver added. "I'm going to take this as a challenge to get back as soon as possible. I look forward to speedy recovery and getting back on the field with my teammates."
A prognosis on his recovery and rehabilitation time will be determined when the UT medical staff evaluates Shanahan later this week.
"It's very unfortunate when any of our guys suffer an injury that will sideline them for any period of time," said Mack Brown. "It is even more difficult when a guy has worked as hard as Kyle has to get ready for the season. We will follow his rehab closely and hope to get him back on the field as soon as possible."
Shanahan, who transferred to UT from Duke in 1999 and sat out last season, completed spring drills as the top backup at flanker on the Longhorns depth chart. He caught 13 passes for 173 yards in 11 career games for the Blue Devils.
