AUSTIN, Texas -- Longhorns senior linebackers D.D. Lewis (Houston, Texas) and Everick Rawls (Texas City, Texas) will represent The University of Texas at the 77th annual East West Shrine Game, which will be played at San Francisco's Pacific Bell Park on Saturday afternoon.
A second-team All-America selection and UT's first-ever Butkus Award semifinalist in 2001, Lewis started all 51 games of his career (including bowl games), a school record. He ranked third on the team with 81 tackles (47 solo) and second with 5.5 sacks this season. The first-team All-Big 12 performer also posted 10 TFLs, 11 QB pressures and recovered a team-high three fumbles. Lewis, UT's career leader with 10 fumble recoveries, was the emotional leader of a Longhorns defense that led the nation in total defense (236.2 ypg) and ranked among the top six in all five statistical categories.
Rawls saw action in all 13 games (12 starts) in 2001 and recorded 74 tackles, five TFLs, seven QB pressures and an interception. A key contributor on the Longhorns' national-leading defense (236.2 ypg), he shared UT's Outstanding Linebacker Award with senior D.D. Lewis this past season. The 6-foot-1, 235 pounder finished his four-year career with 230 tackles, 20 TFLs, 22 QB pressures, two interceptions and five fumble recoveries and started 37 of his final 39 games.
Last year, the Longhorns were represented on the West squad by head coach Mack Brown, offensive coordinator Greg Davis, defensive coordinator Carl Reese, safety Greg Brown, offensive tackle Leonard Davis and defensive tackle Casey Hampton. The West registered a 20-10 victory.
Saturday's game is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 p.m. (CT) and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
