AUSTIN, Texas -- Following the completion of his annual evaluation of his program and coaching staff, Longhorns head football coach Mack Brown announced a realignment of his assistant coaches on Monday.
Brown said offensive guards/centers coach Tim Nunez' contract was not renewed after five seasons coaching the Longhorns offensive lineman, four assistants added duties and one new assistant was hired.
Mac McWhorter, who joined the staff last year as the offensive tackles and tight ends coach, will serve as offensive line coach and Bruce Chambers, who has coached running backs for the past five years, will become the tight ends coach.
Brown hired Mike Haywood as running back coach and assistant special teams coordinator. Haywood, a four-year letterman at Notre Dame and Houston native, has been an assistant coach on the collegiate level for the past 15 years. He spent the last eight seasons as running backs coach at LSU. In 2002, Haywood also served as the Tigers' special teams coordinator.
In other moves within the staff, Brown announced that receivers coach Darryl Drake would assume the title of associate head coach and defensive backs coach Duane Akina would become assistant head coach.
The rest of the Longhorn staff remains intact led by coordinators Greg Davis (offense/quarterbacks) and Carl Reese (defense/linebackers), who are in their sixth season at Texas. Defensive ends coach/recruiting coordinator Hardee McCrary and defensive tackles/special teams coordinator Mike Tolleson also are heading into their sixth seasons at UT.
The Longhorns open spring drills on Monday, Feb. 24.
