AUSTIN, Texas -- UT redshirt freshman offensive tackle Justin Blalock (Plano, Texas/East HS) has been named to the 2003 Scripps/Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team the FWAA announced Wednesday.
Blalock started all 13 games this season at right tackle for the Longhorns and was also named a first-team freshman All-America by The Sporting News. He shared Texas' Most Improved Offensive Player honors in 2003 as well. Blalock served as a key member of a line that paved the way for the nation's sixth-ranked scoring offense (41.0 ppg) and eighth-ranked rushing offense (232.5 ypg), while recording four 300-yard rushing games, the most in a season since 1977.
The 27-member Scripps/FWAA team was selected by an 11-man committee representing each of the NCAA's Division I-A football conferences.
More than 70 players were nominated and evaluated by the committee. The vote took place following the respective conference championship games and before the bowl games. Thirteen of the 27 players selected are true freshmen, including eight on defense.
