Wilson leads Soccer past Iowa State in overtime

AUSTIN, Texas -- Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the Iowa State net at 2:31 of the first overtime to propel Texas (10-5-1, 5-3-1 Big 12) to a 1-0 win over Iowa State (7-9, 4-4 Big 12) in front of 1,210 fans at Myers Stadium on Friday, Oct. 22. Notably, the win marked UT's second consecutive shutout and upped the Horns' school-record home winning streak to nine games, while Texas earned its fifth straight 10-win season.
While Iowa State managed some early pressure in the first half, UT created the first scoring chance of the evening as Wilson broke free inside the ISU penalty area along the right side and fired a shot that Iowa State goalkeeper Joanna Haig got a piece of and deflected off the post to keep the game scoreless. A little later in the half, the Cyclones worked a counter attack that saw Amy Flores redirect a cross at the six yard line past a moving Alex Gagarin (Austin, Texas) in the UT net, but Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) cleared the shot off the goal line to maintain the 0-0 deadlock. Continuing to press their attack, the Horns would not only outshoot the Cyclones by an 11-2 margin in the first period, but seven of those shots found their way on goal only to see Haig come up big and send both teams to the locker room scoreless at the half.
UT again went on the attack in the second half and posted 14 shots, including seven more on goal, but again Haig and the ISU defense were up to the task. After Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) fired a rebound off the far post, Haig made a double save on Wilson and Kennedy from point blank range to keep the game tied at 0-0. Despite Texas' dominance, the tie persisted through 90 minutes and sent the game into overtime. In the first extra session, Iowa State picked up an early chance that went wide of the far post before Texas answered by pinning the attack in the Cyclones end. Kelly McDonald (Littleton, Colo.) then settled a ball in the ISU midfield and chipped a pass to Wilson on the far side, where she took one step prior to blasting a shot from just outside of the penalty area and into the back of the net to end the game. While Gagarin claimed the win behind UT's fifth shutout of the year, Haig incurred the hard-fought loss despite making 14 stops on the night.
Wilson and Kennedy fired nine and six shots, respectively, to headline a Texas offense that put 15 of its 26 shots on goal, while Flores paced the Iowa State attack by notching three of the Cyclones' six shots. Additionally, with her assist on the game-winning score, McDonald has now registered at least one point in each of the last six matches.
The Longhorns now prepare to wrap up their 2004 regular-season home schedule at Myers Stadium with a 1 p.m. Central match presented by University Federal Credit Union against No. 6 Kansas on Sunday, Oct. 24. Of note, the game will also be the final regular-season home match for seven Longhorns seniors, who will be recognized before the contest.
