Riggins delivers game-winning goal in 48th minute
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Alicia Riggins recorded her first goal in burnt orange, as Texas secured a 1-0 win over Grand Canyon at GCU Stadium on Sunday evening.
With the victory, the Longhorns (3-0-1) notched their third clean sheet through their first four matches under head coach Margueritte Bates.
In a physical contest that featured 24 combined fouls, Riggins' strike in the 48th minute proved to be the difference.
The 5-foot-4 forward corralled a lofted feed from fellow junior Ashley Moody just inside the box. Riggins controlled the ball at her feet, took a couple touches along the 18-yard line and rifled a shot into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Defensively, Texas blanked the Lopes (2-1-0) for the first time this season. Grand Canyon, which had scored two goals in each of its first two contests, was held to only two shots on target.
The Longhorns also totaled seven corner kicks, while limiting the Lopes to two.
Goalkeeper Bayliss Flynn registered three saves en route to her third shutout at Texas.
In the win, heralded freshman Caroline Swann made her collegiate debut after returning from a stint with the U.S. U-17 Women's National Team. Swann logged a pair of shots across 81 minutes.
Following their three-match road swing, the Longhorns return home to host No. 6 Baylor at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
