HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- The ninth-seeded University of Texas women's golf team was bounced from the 2004 Collegiate Match Play Championship after dropping its second-round match to 16th-seeded UNLV, 3-2, on Monday, Nov. 15 at the Mission Inn Resort (Las Colinas: Par 72, 6,820 yards). The Longhorns fell to the consolation bracket after being defeated by eighth-seeded Furman in the first round, 4-1. Senior Perry Swenson (Charlotte, N.C.) was the only Longhorn to win both of her matches, defeating Furman's Haley Gildea, 1 up, and downing UNLV's Allison Chell, 4 and 2.
"We just let the match against UNLV slip away," said Texas head coach Susan Watkins. "Our younger players don't have much experience with match play, so it was nice to get them involved in a match play tournament. They can use this experience and get involved in some match play competitions over the summer that will help them as they advance in their careers."
Besides Swenson, junior Devan Andersen (Guadalajara, Mexico) was the only other Longhorn to win a match over the two rounds. She defeated UNLV's Young Pak, 1 up, but fell to Furman's Monique Gesualdi, 1 down. Sophomore Julia Best (Bulverde, Texas) was defeated by UNLV's Seema Sadekar, 4 and 3, and Furman's Theresa Paik, 5 and 4.
Freshmen Jordan Craig (Connellsville, Pa.) and Brittany Givilancz (Weslaco, Texas) were overwhelmed in their first round matches against Furman with Craig falling 5 and 3 to Jenny Suh and Givilancz dropping her match with Connor Atkinson, 6 and 4. But, they both battled against UNLV only to end up 1 down at the end of their rounds.
In other tournament action, top-seeded Duke is taking on 12th-seeded Arizona in one semifinal, while the two-seed Oklahoma State battles third-seeded Arizona State for a trip to the finals. The semifinal matches should conclude today with the finals being played on Tuesday, Nov. 16. For live scoring, visit www.golfstat.com.
This tournament concludes the Longhorns fall season and they will return to the course on Feb. 7 when they travel to Palos Verdes Country Club in Palos Verdes, Calif. to compete at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
