DALLAS - For the third time this season and the fifth time in his career, Longhorn All-American linebacker Derrick Johnson was tabbed the SBC Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It marked the sixth time this season that the Longhorns had a player selected as the conference's player of the week. Johnson joined Oklahoma's Jason White (Offense) and Colorado's Stephone Robinson (Defense) as the SBC Big 12 Conference Players of the Week for games of Nov. 6 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference.
Defensive Player of the Week: Derrick Johnson, Sr, LB, Texas (Waco, Texas)
Johnson registered a career-high 18 tackles (14 solo), three tackles for losses (-8 yards) and paced the Longhorns' 42-0 second half shutout of No. 19 Oklahoma State in a 56-35 win. Texas held the Cowboys to 105 yards (37 yards on 18 rushes/68 passing) on 35 plays in the final 30 minutes as Johnson moved into a tie for first place on the UT all-time tackles for loss list with 60. He had added four tackles that went for no gain as seven of his 14 solo stops on the game went for no yards or negative yardage. His four stops and one TFL aided the Longhorns' effort in holding OSU to three consecutive three-and-outs in third quarter as UT overcame a 35-7 deficit.
Offensive Player of the Week: Jason White, Sr, QB, Oklahoma (Tuttle, Okla.)
White tied the school record he already shared with Josh Heupel when he fired five touchdown passes in the Sooners' 42-35 victory at No. 22-ranked Texas A&M. The senior had scoring tosses of 31, 24, 11, 2, and 39 yards, and led OU to an eight-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 6:36 with the score tied 35-35. It marked the third time in White's career that he threw five touchdown passes in a game and the second time he had done it against A&M. OU head coach Bob Stoops also cited White's game management in noting that OU had no offensive penalties while playing in front of 81,115 fans at Kyle Field.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Stephone Robinson, Fr, PR, Colorado (Denver, Colo.)
Robinson had 98 return yards in Colorado's 30-21 win over Kansas (65 punt, 33 kickoff), with the key being a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown with 12 seconds left in the third quarter that put CU ahead for good at 24-21. It was his first career return for a touchdown, his first career score, and the Buffaloes' first punt return for a touchdown since Jeremy Bloom's 80-yard return against Oklahoma in the 2002 Big 12 Championship game.
