Fourteen members of the Texas Longhorns football team have been named to the coaches' All-Big 12 Conference teams, the conference office announced Wednesday evening, with senior LB Derrick Johnson (Waco, Texas) named Defensive Player of the Year. Senior RB Cedric Benson (Midland, Texas) joined Johnson on the first team as the only players to be unanimous selections.
Johnson became just the second player in Big 12 history to earn both the Defensive Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors during his career, joining Mark Simoneau of Kansas State. He is also a three-time first-team selection. Benson was named to the second team in 2003.
Also on the first team were senior TE Bo Scaife (Denver, Colo.), junior OT Jonathan Scott (Dallas, Texas), sophomore OT Justin Blalock (Plano, Texas), and junior SS Michael Huff (Irving, Texas). Scott was a third-team selection last season.
Longhorns on the second team included junior TE David Thomas (Wolfforth, Texas), junior DT Larry Dibbles (Lancaster, Texas), junior DT Rod Wright (Houston, Texas), junior LB Aaron Harris (Mesquite, Texas) and senior FS Phillip Geiggar (Shreveport, La.). Wright was a third-team selection and Geiggar earned honorable mention honors in 2003.
Receiving honorable mention honors were junior CB Cedric Griffin (San Antonio, Texas), senior PK Dusty Mangum (Mesquite, Texas) and sophomore QB Vince Young (Houston, Texas). Young was the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year last season.
