Derrick Johnson named AP Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

DALLAS -- Senior LB Derrick Johnson (Waco, Texas) was named The Associated Press Big 12 Player of the Year and highlighted a group of 18 Longhorns to earn all-conference honors by The AP. Senior RB Cedric Benson (Midland, Texas) joined Johnson as one of six unanimous selections overall, while junior OT Jonathan Scott (Dallas, Texas) was also named to the first team.
This marks the third consecutive year Johnson has been named to the first team, while Benson was named to the second team and Scott was named honorable mention each the previous two years.
Earning second-team honors were sophomore OT Justin Blalock (Plano, Texas), junior TE David Thomas (Wolfforth, Texas), junior DT Larry Dibbles (Lancaster, Texas), junior DT Rod Wright (Houston, Texas) and junior SS Michael Huff (Irving, Texas).
Wright is on the second team for the second consecutive year, while Thomas earned honorable mention honors in 2003. Dibbles and Huff have been named to the team for the first time.
Tabbed as honorable mention were junior OG Will Allen (Houston, Texas), senior C Jason Glynn (Richardson, Texas), sophomore OG Kasey Studdard (Lone Tree, Colo.), senior TE Bo Scaife (Denver, Colo.), sophomore QB Vince Young (Houston, Texas), senior PK Dusty Mangum (Mesquite, Texas), sophomore DE Tim Crowder (Tyler, Texas), sophomore DE Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas), junior LB Aaron Harris (Mesquite, Texas), and senior FS Phillip Geiggar (Shreveport, La.).
Scaife has been tabbed for honorable mention honors three times in his career, while Young, Geiggar and Mangum have both been named twice. Young also earned honorable mention for all-purpose.
