AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) was named Big 12 Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla., this past weekend, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Robison earned top honors in the shot put with a collegiate-best throw measuring 59-2.75 (18.05m), which qualifies him for the NCAA regional meet in May. That mark currently ranks fourth on the national list. Robison, who placed fifth in the shot at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in February, improved his previous personal best by more than three feet. He earned Big 12 All-Conference honors in the discus last season when he finished sixth at the conference championships with a personal-best throw of 183-7.
Robison, who moved to defensive end this spring on the football team, played in all 13 games last season, starting three at middle linebacker. He recorded 38 tackles and tied UT?s single-season and career record for blocked kicks with four. His record-tying block of an extra point versus Texas Tech with just over nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter preserved a 35-34 lead for Texas. Robison also registered four TFLs, six QB pressures, and a forced fumble.
The Longhorn track team is idle this weekend as it prepares for the 77th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which will conclude Saturday, April 3, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Robison will then cross the street to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and compete in the spring game for football in the evening.
