06.10.2004 | Football
Offensive tackle Jonathon Scott enters his third season with the Longhorns after starting all 13 games at left tackle as a sophomore. Scott was named UT's Most Improved Offensive Player in 2003 and is looking toward continued success in 2004. A pivotal member of the line which paved the way for the high-powered explosive offensive attack of Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the year Vince Young and UT Offensive co-MVP running back Cedric Benson. The Dallas native sat down to chat with Mack Brown-TexasFootball.com in between juggling summer classes and summer workouts.
Does blocking ever get boring? No it's fun. You get to physically control somebody on the field. It's definitely fun. It's a great feeling.
What is your fantasy football highlight? Someone fumbles the ball I pick it up shake a few people and take it to the house.
How long of a run are we talking here? I'm talking the whole field.
Are you fast enough for that? Oh yeah, I run a 4.9, I mean that's pretty fast for 300-plus pounds.
Who is the most fun to block for? Vincent Young, because he can set it up so that you get a great block and at the same time make you look silly because he's so elusive. He has the total package, he can do anything. It definitely brings excitement from an offensive lineman standpoint, because you never know what to expect from him.
Do you talk trash on the field? (Laughs) Yeah, there are times when you get a little emotional in the game; it's nothing personal it's just the heat of the moment.
What do you say? I tend to lose my mind on the field, so it could be anything. It's all just part of the game.
What is it like to have a father who played in the NFL? It definitely sets a standard, kinda like you know this is what is destined for you. It's definitely something I want to strive for. It's been instilled in my life to go to the pinnacle in everything you do, from school to football, social life, anything, I always try to be at the top.
Your father played defensive end, what made you decide to play offensive line? It started in junior high; they just put me out there because I was so massive compared to everybody else. I was a little fat kid. I started off at center; I just had a knack for it. In high school I moved to tackle, and I also played defensive end. But they just needed me so much on offense; I just put all my time and effort at offensive line.
Nicknames are a lost art form. Today we just shorten people's names. Who on the team past or present has the best nickname? I like Marco Martin's nickname because his name is Big Yummy. He has a fun personality and everything just looks yummy to him. That's by far the funniest one.
I know that you are into producing music. Who is your favorite producer? Right now I really have a feel for Lil' John, Eightball and MJG. They have a vibe I feel. I like to incorporate an old school vibe to everything I do, because that's where it all started just soulful music.
Did you watch American Idol? Only the first couple of episodes when they are booing people off. The terrible singers, that's the good part of American Idol.
What is your all-time favorite sporting moment? Texas-OU, every year. It's so much hype in that whole week. Everything is depending on it. It makes the game more fun. It's definitely a challenge. I love to compete. Going out there and playing one of the best teams in the Big 12. You can't do anything but be ready for it.
Who would you pick to win the NBA Finals? I hate to say this, but L.A. They're just monopolizing basketball right now.
I've also heard that you think you are a pretty good basketball player. Could you play basketball at UT? No, they do too much running. I could hang with them for a good quarter, after that, I'm done.
Who's game in the NBA does yours most resemble?
I haven't gotten to their level yet, but my size when I was in high school would have to be Shaq.
Do you think you could take Shaq? Right now? I could man up to him. I'm not scared of him. I know that every man has his weakness; hopefully I could exploit something.
Now for the lighting round.
Gold or Platinum? Platinum
Sugar or Salt? Sugar

Sports car or SUV? SUV
McDonald's or Burger King? Burger King
