FOLLONICA, Italy -- University of Texas rising sophomore Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) continued her stellar string of summer performances in the shot put with a mark of 50-11 (15.52m) to earn top honors at a Pre-World Junior Championships meet on Wednesday, July 7, at Athletica Follonica Stadium in Follonica, Italy. Carter earned a spot on Team USA for the World Junior Track and Field Championships with a first-place finish at the USA Junior Championships on June 27 in College Station, Texas. The 10th IAAF World Junior Championships begin Tuesday, July 13, and continue through Sunday, July 18, in Grosseto, Italy.
Carter, along with seven other Team USA members, competed against junior athletes from Australia, Italy and New Zealand at the meet. The competition provides U.S. athletes an opportunity to compete together before competing at the World Junior Championships.
"I was just going over some technique, getting my feet down at the same time while not trying to release too early," Carter said, who recorded a mark of 53-7 (16.33m) in posting her second consecutive win at the USA Junior Championships almost two weeks ago. "This is going to be a great meet (World Junior Championships) and I am excited to be here because this will be my last junior meet."
Carter's USA teammate Michaela Wallerstedt, a senior at Burke High School (Neb.), claimed runner-up honors with a throw of 46-1.50 (14.06m). Just three athletes were in the field in the women's shot put.
Other Team USA winners on Wednesday included Brandon Johnson (400m hurdles, UCLA), Caitilyn Chock (3,000m, University of Richmond), Kerron Clement (200m, University of Florida) and Josh McDougal (3,000m, Home schooled).
