Weber-Gale, Jamison win at 2004 National Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- University of Texas sophomore All-American Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) and former Longhorn All-American Tanica Jamison (1999-2003) each captured their first career national titles, winning the men's and women's 100-meter freestyle, respectively, on day two of the 2004 ConocoPhillips National Championships, Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Stanford University.
Two weeks after a seventh-place performance at the U.S. Olympic trials, where he missed making the team by 23-hundreths of a second, Weber-Gale won the men's 100m free at the U.S. Nationals with a time of 49.91. The title is the first individual national championship for Weber-Gale. In 2003 at the national championships, Weber-Gale teamed with then-sophomore Gregor Greiner (Abilene, Texas), Christian Lindberg and former Longhorn Neil Walker (1996-98) to capture the 400-meter freestyle relay.
Jamison captured first in the 100m freestyle on the women's side with a time of 55.96, shaving a few hundredths of a second off her time at the Olympic trials.
In other Longhorn news on day two of the championships, junior Wade Kelley (Marietta, Ga.) placed fourth in the 200m butterfly, touching the wall, at 2:01.26, and junior Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas) took home fourth in the 200m breaststroke clocking a 2:16.74.
Overall, eight swimmers were crowned first-time national champions in eight different events on the second day of Nationals. Kelley, Jamison, Schurr and Weber-Gale join a host of Texas affiliated swimmers competing for Longhorn Aquatics, who have amassed 204 team points and hold a commanding 82.5-point lead over second-place competitor, France, through the first two days of competition.
