AUSTIN, Texas -- Using a 34-shot attack and goals from four different players, including a pair from senior Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas), No. 13 Texas (2-1) posted a 5-0 victory over Florida International (0-3) in front of a crowd of 882 fans at Myers Stadium on Friday, Sept. 3.
For the second straight match, sophomore Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) put the Horns out in front as she found the back of the FIU net in the 14th minute of the match with an unassisted score. Wilson and freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) then scored less than two minutes apart later in the first period to stake Texas to a 3-0 advantage. While Wilson converted a service from Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas), Carpenter finished a slotted pass in the box from Julie Gailey (San Ramon, Calif.), who was sprung by Thaden.
The three-goal advantage would remain through halftime and into the second period where Karen Haight (Beaverton, Ore.) made a run from her defensive spot to work a give-and-go with Carpenter that resulted in her first career goal and a 4-0 UT lead. A little over 21 minutes later, Wilson netted her third goal in as many games and second of the match to extend the Horns' advantage to 5-0. From there, Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) and the Texas defense held off some late charges from the Golden Panthers, who took five of their eight shots in the second half, to close out the win and notch the Longhorns' first shutout of the season. While Hall improved to 2-1 on the year with her fifth career shutout, FIU goalkeeper Carly Agro, who left due to injury in the second period, incurred the loss.
Headlining the UT offense on the night was Wilson, who recorded her eighth career multiple-goal game, and the tandem of Thaden and Carpenter, who collected three points on the night with one goal and one assist apiece. Meanwhile, Florida International had its attack led by Yaneash Donaldson and Tamara Kochen, who each accounted for two of the team's eight shots.
The Horns return to action on Sunday, Sept. 5 when they host the Greyhounds of Loyola College (Md.) at Myers Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Central.
