DALLAS -- Former Longhorns quarterback and current Southlake Carroll High School Coach Todd Dodge is the 2004 winner of the Schutt Sports National High School Coach of the Year Award. Dodge, who lettered at UT from 1982-85, will receive the award on Saturday, January 29 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, just North of DFW Airport.
Southlake Carroll completed a perfect 16-0 season by defeating Smithson Valley, 27-24, in the Texas 5A/Division II Championship game. Winning their second championship in three years, the Southlake Dragons have a combined three-year record of 47-l. This year's Southlake team averaged 46 points a game and defeated three high schools ranked among the nation's top 25 teams. The team was led by quarterback Chase Daniel, Texas State Player of the Year.
Dodge ranks eighth on the UT all-time passing list (2,791 yards) and stands eighth in TD passes (18). His 359 passing yards in Texas' 44-16 win over Rice in 1985 stood as the Longhorns single-game record for 13 years before James Brown broke it with a 397-yard passing day against Texas Tech in 1997. Dodge's passing effort currently ranks third on the UT single-game chart.
One of the nation's leading equipment manufacturers, Schutt Sports has honored the top coaches of the year since 1997. Each award -- for both high school and college divisions -- symbolizes the essence of what makes a coach successful, both on and off the field. Through an extraordinary 2004 season, Dodge epitomizes the character and demeanor of what it means to be an outstanding coach.
