Texas upends Iowa State by a score of 2-1

AMES, Iowa -- Ashley Foster scored what proved to be the eventual game-winning goal in the 62nd minute and Dianna Pfenninger made a game-saving stop late in regulation to help Texas pull out a 2-1 road victory over Iowa State in front of 315 fans at the ISU Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 14.
While the UT (7-6-1, 4-3-0 Big 12) victory over the Cyclones (8-5-3, 3-3-1 Big 12) gave the Longhorns four wins in their last five matches, it also marked Texas' first road triumph since Sept. 24, 2004 - a 3-2 win at Texas Tech in double overtime. Additionally, the win gives the Horns 12 points in league play this year and keeps them within one point of the conference lead.
Although the Longhorns outshot ISU by a 14-3 margin in the opening period, the game remained scoreless entering the 45th minute of action as Cyclones' goalkeeper Joanna Haig came up with five of her nine saves in the match and Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) posted two stops of her own. Then, with 15 seconds remaining before the intermission, Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) settled a pass from Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) from about eight yards out and deposited it into the back of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the year to stake Texas to a 1-0 lead.
In the second period, UT grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the 62nd minute as Foster (Athens, Ga.) volleyed a pass into the goal from about 18 yards out as defender Jill Gilbeau (San Diego, Calif.) made a long run out of the backfield and found Foster open at the top of the penalty area. Less than two minutes later, the Cyclones responded with a goal from Amy Flores, who finished a cross from Erin Witte, to cut the UT lead in half. Iowa State then looked to knot the game at 2-2 with about 12 minutes remaining as Flores broke free and fired a shot from about 16 yards away, but Pfenninger managed to dive to her right and tip the shot over the crossbar and keep the Horns in front. Although ISU would narrowly outshoot the Horns by a 10-8 margin the second half, Pfenninger and Horns defense held strong over the final minutes to preserve the one-goal victory. While Pfenninger earned her fifth win of the year behind a four-save effort, Haig shouldered the tough loss.
"Our team played very well tonight," UT head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "This was a big game for us. We needed to get a win and a road victory in the Big 12 is huge for our club. We are starting to mature and do a lot of the little things better at the right time."
Headlining Texas' 22-shot attack was Foster, who fired a team-best five shots while netting her team-leading second game-winning goal of the year, and Kennedy, who scored for the third time in two matches and set an individual career best as she scored her team-high fifth goal of the season. Iowa State, meanwhile, had its offense, which tallied 13 shots on the evening, led by Flores, who placed three of her team-best four shots on goal.
Up next, the Horns return home to Myers Stadium for a 1 p.m. Central match presented by UFCU against No. 25 Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 16.
