Soccer earns fourth straight win with 4-1 road victory over Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- By scoring four times on 17 shots and receiving a three-point effort from sophomore Kelsey Carpenter, Texas earned its fourth straight conference win with a 4-1 victory over Missouri in front of 561 fans at the Audrey J. Walton Soccer Complex on Friday, Oct. 21.
The Longhorns' (9-6-1, 6-3-0 Big 12) three-goal win over Missouri (8-6-3, 3-4-2 Big 12) not only gave UT its second road victory in as many away contests as the Horns have now won six of their last seven matches, but also propelled the team into sole possession of first place in the Big 12 standings as league-leader Colorado dropped a 2-1 decision to Texas A&M.
A little over 10 minutes into the first half, Texas grabbed a 1-0 lead as Kelsey Carpenter (Euless, Texas) threaded a pass to Amy Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) in the box that she finished for her third goal of the year. UT would add to its advantage in the 39th minute as a free kick off the foot of freshman Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) from 45 yards out was deflected by a Missouri defender on an attempted clear into the MU net for an own goal to stake the Horns to a 2-1 lead. Just over a minute later, Moore struck again by firing a free kick from seven yards outside the penalty area into the upper right-hand corner of the goal past MU keeper Laura Buehrig to push Texas in front by a score of 3-0. Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) and the UT defense then held off the Tigers' 11-shot attack in the first half to head into the intermission with their three-goal lead in tact.
In the second period, Missouri continued to press its offense, but the Longhorns managed to add another goal to their advantage at 77:22 when Carpenter ran onto a pass from Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) in the MU midfield, beat her defender and rocketed a shot from 18 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal for her team-leading sixth score of the year. While the Tigers did counter with an Amber Swinehart goal set up by Ashley Hamblin at 78:33, that was as close as they would come despite 11 more second-half shots as Pfenninger and the Texas defense held strong over the final minutes. While Pfenninger made a career-best eight saves for the second straight match to earn the win and improve to 7-4 on the year, Buehrig shouldered the loss despite making seven stops over 90 minutes of action.
"We played extremely well this evening," UT head coach Chris Petrucelli said. " We were extremely dynamic in attack and probably played our best game offensively all year. Our team was dangerous up front from the opening whistle. While we've now got some momentum heading into our next match, we understand that playing at Kansas on Sunday will be a difficult test for us. Still, this is the kind of performance we want to build off of as a team."
Paving the way for the UT offense on the evening was Carpenter, who recorded three points with a goal and an assist to give her nine points in the last four matches, and Moore, who scored her fourth goal of the season on a team-best four shots. Meanwhile, the Tigers, who outshot the Horns by a 22-17 margin for the match, had their attack led by Hamblin, who picked up an assist and tallied a game-high five shots, and Swinehart, who registered her 10th goal of the year.
Up next, the Horns head to Super Target Field in Lawrence, Kan., for a 1 p.m. Central match with the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday, Oct. 23. Of note, that match will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by CSTV and will air on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Central.
