Eighteen Longhorns named to 2005 Academic All-Big 12 Team

DALLAS -- The Big 12 Conference named its 2005 Football Academic All-Big 12 Team Tuesday and 18 members of the squad were Longhorns, including seven first-team honorees.
Among those honored, UT senior DB Karim Meijer was one the only student-athlete with a perfect 4.00 grade point average, the second straight year he has posted a perfect GPA
Seven Longhorns, including Meijer, earned spots on the first team: senior WR Xang Chareunsab, sophomore C Dallas Griffin, junior WR Christoph Peters, senior DB Cody Stavig, senior TE David Thomas and redshirt freshman TE Peter Ullman. Griffin, Meijer and Thomas have earned a spot on the first team the last two years.
Eleven others were named to the second team: Senior OG Allen, senior DE Steven Andrade, junior RB Sam Areias, sophomore RB Matt Hofer, junior P/PK Greg Johnson, sophomore LB Drew Kelson, sophomore DT Derek Lokey, senior PK Kyle Phillips, senior DB James Ray, senior DS Nick Schroeder and senior DB Jerren Wright.
Allen has earned second-team honors for the second straight year after being named first team in 2002, while Schroeder was named to the first team the previous two seasons.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the football academic all-league team consisted of 72 first team members combined with 54 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team members are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
