DALLAS -- Texas junior outside hitter Dariam Acevedo earned her first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor after standout play in a pair of volleyball matches last week, the conference announced Monday.
The Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, native led No. 14 Texas to a pair of victories and helped the Horns match their season-best six-match winning streak. The Longhorns went on the road Tuesday, Nov. 1, to Texas State, and swept the Bobcats in three games before coming home to win a four-game match against Baylor on Saturday, Nov. 5.
For the week, Acevedo averaged 5.34 kills per game (16 per three-game match) and hit .525 while adding 2.29 digs per game.
At Texas State on Tuesday, Acevedo recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills - one off the match high - and 13 digs. She also hit .348 with only three errors on 23 attacks. Additionally, she posted one assist and one block in that match.
On Saturday against Baylor, Acevedo established new career highs with 27 kills and a .632 attack percentage as UT won, 3-1. She also had two aces, three digs and one block in the victory.
Her .632 attack percentage against the Bears stands as the Big 12's best for any player who has recorded more than 20 kills this season in all matches, and 16 kills in conference matches only.
One of Texas' primary passers, Acevedo was also perfect with service receptions last week.
On the year, Acevedo is ranked fifth in the Big 12 (conference matches only) in kills per game (3.88) and points per game (4.61) and is also tied for sixth in aces per game (0.35).
Acevedo was named the 2004 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after her 2003 transfer from Oregon. Twice she was named Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year (2003 and 2004), but she missed all but two matches of the 2003 season after suffering a torn left anterior cruciate ligament in her second match as a Longhorn.
The Longhorns return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 9, when they travel to Colorado to face a surging Buffaloes squad that has won its last seven matches. First serve is set for 8 p.m. Central and the match will be aired live on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain.
