WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Senior Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) earned All-America honors in 100-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay and sophomore Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky) earned her fourth All-America honor of the meet after taking fifth-place in the championship finals of the 200-yard breaststroke to lead The University of Texas women's swimming and diving team on Saturday as it wrapped up competition at the 2005 NCAA Championships with its sixth-straight top-10 finish after placing sixth with 218 points. Georgia, who led all three days of the meet, finished with 609.5 points, while defending national champion Auburn was second with 492 points. Arizona rounded out the top three with 440.
"I am very pleased, optimistic and excited about our team's growth this year," Texas co-head coach Jill Sterkel said. "I truly do believe their commitment to raising the level and racing tougher got us to this point. We had a lot of great things happen this week, but we also had a lot of frustrating things happen, and our girls keep focused and they never quit. I think that is something they developed and created all year long and that is how you becoming a championship team."
Wanezek closed out her stellar collegiate career at UT by swimming seven events at the 2005 NCAA Championships, earning All-America recognition and posting Texas' top performance in each one. A member of three relay squads and competitor in two individual events heading into the final day of the NCAA Championships, Wanezek competed on her fourth relay and third individual event and upped her career totals to 16 All-America honors and eight All-America Honorable Mention awards on Saturday by placing 13th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.59 and anchoring the Longhorns' 400-yard freestyle relay, which combined for the eighth-fastest time of the meet (3:19.54).
"I wish Sarah had four more years." Sterkel said. "She has obviously developed into a phenomenal swimmer and student-athlete at UT. On the first day of the meet, she raced six times for us and never complained because that's just the type of person she is. She does everything with a smile on her face and we will miss her greatly."
Following Wanezek's performance, Tinnon, who had qualified with the second-fastest time in the preliminary swim this morning and went on to place fifth in her second individual event in as many days by posting a time of 2:10.97 in the championship final of the 200-yard breaststroke. Tinnon, who had placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday evening, finished the meet earning All-America honors in a total of four events - the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and 200- and 400-yard medley relays - to bring her career total to eight. Meanwhile, in the consolation final of the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore All-American Leah Avilla (Livermore, Calif.) placed fifth in her heat to earn a 13th-place finish overall and her second All-America Honorable Mention honor in as many days and of her career.
Texas got off to a good start in the first event of the evening session when junior Elizabeth Wycliffe (Kingston, Ontario) and freshman Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas) placed 10th and 13th, respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke. Wycliffe's performance in the that event marked the second-straight year that she has placed within the top-16 in that event to earn All-America Honorable Mention recognition. McGregory, meanwhile, has now posted top-16 finishes in both backstrokes and wrapped up her first NCAA meet by earning All-America recognition in four events.
Texas concluded the meet with an eighth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay after junior Kristy Siminski (Portage, Ind.), senior Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.) sophomore Connie Brown (Andover, Mass.) and Wanezek combined to post a time of 3:18.97. Humphries closed her collegiate career as a four-time All-American. The All-America recognition marks the third of the meet for Brown and Siminski, bringing their respective career totals to four and 10. Georgia made NCAA history by winning the event and becoming the first team in NCAA history to sweep all five relay events at the NCAA Championships, clocking an NCAA record time of 3:13.56. Auburn and Arizona placed second and third, respectively, to round out the top three.
Saturday's diving event, the 10-meter platform, saw UT senior Monica Maxwell (San Jose, Calif.) wrapped up her collegiate diving career and first NCAA Championships by posting a score of 364.95, which good for 19th.
