After the completion of spring football, junior safety Michael Huff and sophomore defensive end Brian Robison are again focusing on track and field. Huff spent the indoor season running the 60 meters and produced a top time of 6.82 at the Houston Indoor Classic on January 29. The Irving, Texas native made his outdoor and Texas Relays debut on Friday, April 8, when he led off the 4x100-meter relay. The Longhorns finished third in their heat, behind Florida and Houston, but did notch a regional qualifier of 40.15. After setting an indoor personal best in the shot put during the 2005 season, Robison is scheduled to open his Texas Relays with the Discus (Section A) at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 8. Mack Brown-TexasFootball.com will have an update from him after the completion of his event. In the meantime, Huff sat down to talk with Mack Brown-TexasFootball.com about his first outdoor track and field experience at Texas.
On the Texas Relays: It is the Texas Relays. You've gotta love it. It is the biggest track event in Texas and it is my first time competing here. It felt good to go out there in front of the fans and the other football players who are out here supporting me. I want to encourage all the fans to come out and support the Texas athletes. Brian (Robison) will be throwing today and tomorrow and we've got plenty of other events going on.
On getting back on the track after spring football: I've been running track all my life, so it is always there. I just need to bring it back out. It felt good to get out there and run, and I'm sure I'll get better each week. I'm very happy with my decision to run track.
On the 4x100 relay team's performance: I think they ran 40.9 last week, so our main focus is getting better from week to week and race to race. Hopefully, we'll be able to come out tomorrow and improve again. We put up one of the best times in the Big 12, so we'll just try and get better each week.
On transferring his leadership from football to track: In most cases, I let the track guys take charge, but I'll step up if I think it will help the team.
