Junior defensive end/thrower Brian Robison had one of the best meets of his collegiate career at the 2005 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. He won the shot put title in dramatic fashion with a throw that beat his personal best by over two feet (64-7.75). Then, he finished third in the discus with a throw of 181-4 and finished as the Texas men¹s high scorer with 16 points. The Splendora, Texas native took a break from his preparations for regionals to speak about the Big 12 Championships, his victory in the shot put and his effect on the team¹s performance.
On the Big 12 Championships: I'm really happy with the way things went last weekend. I'm proud of our team for fighting back on the last day and getting back into it. Sometimes, things don't go totally your way, but you can't ask for everything to go perfect all the time. But, overall I'm happy with what happened.
On the shot put competition: It helped that I was last in the order. Sometimes, when you are in competitions like that, you find out a lot about yourself. A true champion can come through when it counts and battle back from adversity and I think I was able to do that. All three guys that finished in the top three did what they needed to do to win that competition, fortunately for me, things just happened to fall in that order.
On posting personal bests, twice, in the shot put: Overall, I'm not that surprised by it. I've been doing it in practice. It was only a matter of time before everything clicked in a competition and that is what happened. I stayed relaxed through most of the throws and then I hit a big one. When you are in a competition like that, the adrenaline hits you big time and you feel like you can do anything. I just went out there and did what I had to do.
On what his victory meant to the team: First off, I just want to thank my teammates for the way they supported me. Ronald (Hill) was in the long jump at the same time, so it was great to see them running back and forth between the events. I think my victory gave the team a boost. It showed them that anything can happen at anytime, and I think, for the most part, they pulled through and did very well.
