Birdow, 4x100m relay lead Women’s Track & Field on second day of NCAA Championships

Birdow advanced to 400m hurdles final while relay posts season-best time to reach Saturday’s championship race.
EUGENE, Ore. – Texas Women's Track & Field opened competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday at Hayward Field, highlighted by Amelliah Birdow advancing to the 400-meter hurdles final and the Longhorns' 4x100-meter relay securing a spot in Saturday's championship race.
Birdow led the way for Texas, winning heat one of the 400-meter hurdles in 55.63 to earn a spot in Saturday's final with the fifth-fastest time of the session.
The Longhorns also advanced their 4x100-meter relay squad to the national final. The quartet of Carleta Bernard, Holly Okuku, Abigail Wolfe and Naomi London clocked a season-best 43.01, advancing on time with the seventh-fastest mark of the evening.
Bayleigh Minor placed 14th in the 400-meter prelims with a time of 51.61, while Bernard added an individual appearance in the 100 meters, placing 17th overall in 11.17 seconds (11.163).
Texas' 4x400-meter relay of Elise Cooper, Ramiah Elliott, Birdow and Minor combined to run 3:30.65 and finish 14th overall.
In the field, Giavonna Meeks placed 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 65.81 meters (215-11). The throw ranks as the 11th-best performance in program history. The Texas record holder in the event, Meeks owns each of the top 25 marks in school history.
The Longhorns return to action Friday with Tabea Eitel opening competition in the heptathlon. Eitel will begin the two-day, seven-event competition with the 100-meter hurdles at 1:45 p.m. CT (11:45 a.m. PT).
The Texas men will conclude their portion of the competition Friday at Hayward Field. Osawese Agbonkonkon will compete in the high jump final beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT (4:30 p.m. PT), while Kelsey Daniel will contest the triple jump final. On the track, Kendrick Smallwood is set to race in the 110-meter hurdles final and Kody Blackwood will compete in the 400-meter hurdles final.
