AUSTIN, Texas -- If you are on The University of Texas campus in June and July, don't be surprised to find hundreds of youngsters - ages 10-17 - making their way across the UT campus, dressed in burnt orange and white. In their backpacks, you will find three things - basketball shoes, a water bottle and a special t-shirt which signifies that they are a proud Texas Girls Basketball Camp participant.
Texas head coach Jody Conradt is conducting her 29th summer of specialized girls basketball camps on the UT campus. Each year, the Longhorn assistant coaches (associate head coach Karen Aston, assistant coach Kathy Harston and assistant coach Travis Mays) join with coaches and former collegiate players from around the nation to conduct these top-flight camps for young players.
In addition, most of the current Texas women's basketball players will work as camp counselors. The Longhorn student-athletes truly have a busy summer schedule, as they juggle summer school classes and studies while serving as camp counselors and coaches. Additionally, many Texas Exes also return to assist with summer camp.
This year, the four weeks of camps were highly-anticipated, and sellouts of the camps were expected. There is flexibility for the campers to choose to be dorm (overnight) campers or day campers. Three different camp options exist this year: two weeks of Fundamental Camp (June 5-9, June 19-23); a three-day Advanced Training Camp (July 1-3); and a three-day Team Camp (July 29-31). The Advanced Training Camp will be a highly intense three-day session which is geared toward the exceptionally motivated player and focuses on shooting and position play.
Due to the popularity of the Texas Girls Basketball Camps, four different sites on campus are used at different times: The Frank Erwin Center, the state-of-the-art Cooley Pavilion (basketball practice facility), Gregory Gym and the Rec Sports Center.
In each camp session, the campers receive individual instruction and drills for five hours daily, have nightly scrimmages and shooting competitions, and still find time for entertainment (hanging out in the dorms at night and shopping) outside of basketball!
All in all, Texas Girls Basketball Camp showcases young developing talent all summer long on the UT campus and gives the UT coaching staff and student-athletes a chance to "give back" to youngsters who are learning to love the game of basketball - just as they do.
