SACRAMENTO -- Junior Trey Hardee (Birmingham, Ala.) won the NCAA Championship in the decathlon after posting personal bests in four of the 10 events and setting a school record with 7,881 points. He beat out Dartmouth's Mustafa Abdur-Rahim (7,739 points) and Missouri's Hans Uldal (7,687 points). Sophomore Donovan Kilmartin (Eagle, Idaho) earned All-America honors with a fourth-place finish (7,662 points).
"I was kind of down towards the end of the first day," said Hardee. "But, I had a personal best in the 400 meters and then I came out and had a PR in the hurdles to start the second day and it really got me going. I knew it was going to be a fight, but everything just fell into place for me today."
Hardee started the competition with a victory in the 100 meters (10.86). He went on to finish eighth in the long jump with a leap of 23-0 and 12th in the shot put with a throw of 43-1.50. During a steady rain, he only managed to clear 6-0.75 in the high jump, but he came back to notch the first of his four personal bests with a 48.33 in the 400 meters to move into fourth place at the end of the first day with 3,947 points.
Hardee started second-day action with a PR in the 110-meter hurdles, blazing past the field in 14.09 to score 963 points. He moved on to the discus where he notched a throw of 158-7, bettering his old personal best by over 10 feet, to score 836 points and take the overall lead.
From there, Hardee moved to the pole vault where he cleared 15-9 to tie for second place and score 849 points. He posted the fourth of his personal bests in the javelin with a throw of 184-8, which bettered his old mark by over 10 feet. Then, he cruised in the 1,500 meters, crossing the finish line in 4:52.46 to break Rusty Hunter's school record of 7,845 points.
Kilmartin finished the first day in third place after setting a collegiate-best of 24-6.50 in the long jump and winning the high jump. He started the second day by finishing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.67 to add 890 points. He then set a personal best in the discus with a throw of 137-6 to score 703 points. From there, it was on to the pole vault, which he easily won with a clearance of 16-4.75 to score 910 points.
