Women's Golf success and history backbones Football's 2005 theme

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas football program will take a page from the Longhorns' golf programs by using the phrase "Take dead aim," as its theme for the upcoming campaign.
Famed University of Texas men's golf coach Harvey Penick coined the phrase "Take dead aim," when working with his students and molding players like Texas alumni Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite into NCAA Champions.
"We have chosen a theme for the team each year," said head coach Mack Brown. "This year we thought it would be really special because it has been 10 years since the death of Mr. Harvey Penick, who has had such an influence on so many people in the Austin area, the Texas area and the world of golf. But his influence seems to have reached much further."
He passed that knowledge and wisdom on to current UT head women's coach Susan Watkins, who uses the time she spent with arguably one of the best golf instructors ever to encourage and improve her student-athletes on and off the course.
"What Harvey was trying to get across to people is important for student-athletes across our campus," said Watkins. "Taking dead aim covers aspects of what we do as coaches and athletes. It can benefit people from all walks of life."
With Tinsley Penick, Harvey Penick's son, and Watkins present, Brown announced to the media his plans for this year's theme.
"In listening to so many people who have been touched by Mr. Penick's life, I really heard a message about coaching," said Brown. "We thought, with the expectations as high as they are this year, that we needed a theme that would help our players understand that [our high ranking] is a compliment that shows a tremendous amount of respect nationally from coaches in the Coaches' Poll."
"It's an honor and a thrill to be a part of this," said Watkins. "Simplicity was the key according to Harvey. It is a strong and solid message that will transition from golf to football and all our sports here at Texas."
