No. 21 Soccer drops 2-0 decision at Oklahoma State in Big 12 opener

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Despite holding the upper hand in shots by a 23-8 margin for the match, No. 21 Texas could not overcome two early first-half goals from junior forward Jesyca Rosholt and dropped a 2-0 decision to Oklahoma State in front of 1,037 fans at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 23.
While the game marked the Big 12 opener for both schools, the result dropped the Longhorns overall record to 3-4-1 overall and increased the Cowgirls season mark to an unblemished 8-0-2.
OSU jumped in front 1-0 during the 15th minute of action as Rosholt netted her eighth goal of the year off an assist from Angelika Feldbacher. A little over six minutes later, Rosholt managed to push another shot past UT starting goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) to stake the Cowgirls to a 2-0 advantage after converting a feed from the tandem of Jessica Jarrell and Cassie Lewis. The Longhorns, meanwhile, looked to respond by pressuring Oklahoma State's end of the field with 11 shots, but OSU goalkeeper Bettina Grossman posted three saves and weathered a breakaway attempt from Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) and a shot off the crossbar by Stephanie Logterman (Austin, Texas) to keep the lead in tact at halftime.
In the second period, the Horns continued their offensive barrage by outshooting the Cowgirls by a 12-3 margin, but again Grossman and the Oklahoma State defense were up to the challenge. Not only did Grossman tally two more saves, but she also escaped a free kick attempt from 22 yards out off the foot of freshman Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) that just sailed over the crossbar. In spite of the constant offensive pressure, the Horns were not able to break through against the Cowgirls and incurred a tough 2-0 defeat in which Grossman picked up the win and Hall shouldered the loss in goal for their respective clubs.
"We dug ourselves a hole in the first half," UT head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "While we had a lot of pressure throughout the match, we were not able to put away our chances and made it very difficult on ourselves. We now have to recover from this road loss and be ready to play against Oklahoma in Norman on Sunday."
Pacing Texas' 23-shot attack on the evening was the trio of Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas), Moore and Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas), who combined for 17 shots, including a match-best eight by Carpenter. On the other side of the ledger, Oklahoma State was led by Rosholt, who found the back of the UT net on two of her team-best four shots.
Up next, the Horns travel to Norman, Okla., to face the Oklahoma Sooners in a 1 p.m. Central match on Sunday, Sept. 25.
